The Neocatechumenal Way as it has been approved by the Holy See is a "Post baptismal catechumenate at the service of the Bishops as a form of diocesan implementation of Christian initiation and of ongoing education in faith, in accordance with the indications of the Second Vatican Council and the Magisterium the Church. From the initial catechesis, it typically takes several years and passing through stages of faith formation in the local communities, until a member reaches the "renewal of the baptismal vows.

This post-baptismal formation helps deepen the faith for adults that have already been baptized, and provides basic instruction to those that are far from the Church. This itinerary of formation adapts the rites of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult (RCIA) for those that have already been baptized, without repeating the sacrament of baptism. El Camino Neocatecumenal, tal como ha sido aprobado por la Santa Sede, es un "catecumenado postbautismal al servicio de los Obispos como forma de realización diocesana de la iniciación cristiana y de la educación permanente en la fe, según las indicaciones del Concilio Vaticano II y del Magisterio la Iglesia". Desde la catequesis inicial, suelen pasar varios años y etapas de formación en la fe en las comunidades locales, hasta que un miembro llega a la "renovación de los votos bautismales".

Esta formación post-bautismal ayuda a profundizar en la fe a los adultos que ya han sido bautizados, y proporciona una instrucción básica a los que están alejados de la Iglesia. Este itinerario de formación adapta los ritos del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos (RICA) para los que ya han sido bautizados, sin repetir el sacramento del bautismo.
